Jay Michaels

Producer • Director • PR Strategist • Educator • Media Personality

Jay Michaels is a cornerstone of the New York independent arts scene, possessing a career that spans over four decades of evolution in theatre, film, and communications. From his roots in the gritty, experimental “underground” Off-Off-Broadway movement of the late 1970s to his current status as a global PR titan and media commentator, Michaels has dedicated his life to the promotion, p roduction, and preservation of the arts.

Early Career & Broadway Foundations

Michaels began his professional journey in the high-stakes environments of the New York Daily News and PBS. He quickly transitioned into the heart of the theatrical world, serving as a promotional staff member for The Joyce Theater’s Drama Desk Award-winning American Theater series.

His expertise in logistical management and marketing led him to serve as the national tour manager for some of the most iconic productions in musical theatre history, including Cats, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Les Misérables. His Broadway credits further include managing promotional events for landmark shows such as the 1992 revival of Guys & Dolls, Damn Yankees (1994), The Vagina Monologues (2005), and more recently, Beginnings (2018) and Audra McDonald at Town Hall (2019).

The “Voice” of the Industry

A gifted orator and strategist, Michaels has been the “man behind the curtain” for international galas and fundraisers. His work as a speechwriter and senior marketing executive has supported industry giants such as The Shuberts, The Nederlanders, and The Weisslers, as well as cultural icons and political figures including James Earl Jones, Jon Stewart, Vera Wang, Hillary Clinton, and Mayors John Lindsay and David Dinkins.

Independent Arts & Jay Michaels Global Communications (JMGC)

As the founder of Jay Michaels Global Communications, Jay has pioneered a “boutique” approach to public relations, specifically designed to empower independent artists and international talent. His firm provides a platform for indie stage companies and filmmakers to achieve mainstream visibility.

His production credits are equally diverse, having worked alongside luminaries like Daryl Roth, Jim Kierstead, Ken Davenport, American Theatre of Actors, among others. Notably, his promotional acumen recently contributed to the success of several motion pictures, including an Academy Award-winning short film and several of his clients have won – or have been nominated – for BroadwayWorld Awards.

Media Personality & Commentary

An expert in film history—specifically the horror and sci-fi genres—Michaels is a familiar face and voice in digital media. He is the star of ACW-TV’s Jay Watch and produces and host the popular podcasts Indie Influencer. He also provided on-air commentary for The Boston Sci-Fi Channel, Sun Television Studios and Octane Media.

Management, Academia, & Advocacy

Throughout his career, Michaels has helmed several of New York’s vital cultural hubs, including:

  • The Jan Hus Playhouse
  • The Mazer Theater (Lower East Side)
  • The Chelsea Opera Theater
  • The Greek Cultural Center (Queens)
  • Block Arts Center (Brooklyn)

As a Professor of Communications, he translates his decades of “in-the-trenches” experience into the classroom, mentoring the next generation of arts administrators and performers. He is also a published author and a sought-after lecturer at institutions such as NYU.

Awards & Board Memberships

Jay’s contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, including:

  • The Jean Dalrymple Award
  • The Fresh Fruit Theatre Festival Community Award
  • Fearcon Film Festival’s HOST Award (Two-time recipient)
  • The Federation’s Marketing STAR Award
  • The Robin H. Miller Award

He currently serves on the board of the Queens Culture and Arts Network and is an honorary board member of Pace University.
